Hello, Cleveland!

[ 9.17.2005 ]

Even without a new Death From Above 1979 album on the near horizon (March is the latest word), Jesse F. Keeler is providing plenty to talk about. The bass-playing half of DFA79 has gotten his production studio MSTRKRFT rolling and has a slew of remixes both out and on the way. He also has a sick mustache. Check out their website for a list of their remixes, which sounds like a who's who list of bands I like. And for a more detailed backstory, check out this Eye Weekly feature.

The remixes shows off the funkier, dancier side of Keeler's palette, which turns out to be almost as strong as the death metal/disco-rock side. To sample four of MSTRKRFT's remixes head over to their MySpace page. And here's an mp3 thanks to the fine folks over at The Prettiest Pony:

Juliette & The Licks / "Got Love to Kill [MSTRKRFT Remix]

Yes, it's THAT Juliette Lewis, who is releasing her own LP in addition to the guest vocals she did on the massively disappointing last Prodigy album. Her vocals actually work really well on this remix, which gets remanufactured from a quick bit of not-terrible, vaguely punky sleeze-rock into a thumping little dancefloor number. The feel is very similar to the MSTRKRFT remix of the Panthers' "Thank Me With Your Hands," which everyone I know seems to really like.

Before I start to sound like I'm endorsing Juliette Lewis as a musician I will direct you to the title track off her new album, You're Speaking My Language, which you can listen to her on her website. Be warned, you should only listen to it if you think watching old people fight and dogs puke on themselves is funny, otherwise stop reading. It's a fuzzed-out piece of shit which begins by her saying "This one goes out...to the entire world." Which would be horrible enough, but then she also says "That's right." I know Scientologists tend to be morons but c'mon, there's no way to like a song after starting it like that.
