So I have been kind of all over the place musically but I will try to pin down some of the better bands I've linked recently:
Mahjongg
"Jamdek"
"Hot Lava"
"Stubborn Horse"
Machinegong EP
Mahjongg are a band. Besides that, the best word for them would be experimental. However, their best stuff has three important traits: simple, repetitive funk guitar, a combination of electronic and old school percussion, and vocals which are non-existent or mixed deep into the background. If you think both !!! and the Rapture are a little too accesible, then a) you have issues and b) you will DEFINITELY like Mahjongg. Let's be clear, this band will never be on Leno or a Now collection, but they've got some cool stuff. Respect to Bliss Pop and Frank Payne for the tip.
They're a five-piece originally from Missouri that relocated to Chicago and are on the Cold Crush label. They released the Machinegong EP (free and legal mp3s of all songs at the above link) before their full-length debut Raydawncong came out a little while ago.
Snowden
"Black Eyes"
"Victim Card"
I posted stuff about Snowden about a month ago, but since yesterday I have been basking in the glory of "Black Eyes," one of the best songs I've heard this summer. It's kind of got an Interpol-drenched-in-feedback-and-reverb vibe. Very cool, and give it some time, it grew on my like a motherfucker.
Editors
"Blood"
"Bullets"
Editors are a British band from Birmingham. Their music is propulsive; they sound kind of like a band which heard "Say Hello to the Angels" and decided the world needed a whole lot more of that shit (and they're right). Of course they're not good enough to replicate the goodness of "Say Hello" but it's a worthy effort.
Tiger Baby
"Shy"
"Chinese Fairytale"
"Sweetheart"
I've been talking a lot about Tiger Baby, mostly because I like their music, but also because I love saying the phrase "Tiger Baby." It's a Danish group featuring two guys and a female vocalist, and their songs are synth/keyboard heavy pop, though it's a little darker and moodier than run-of-the-mill shitty pop music. It initially reminded me of the Sneaker Pimps, but in the interest of full disclosure you should know that the only song I know by the Sneaker Pimps is "Six Underground."
