In college there were only a handful of bands we all agreed on: Radiohead, the Flaming Lips, Wilco, and Nada Surf. The good news is that the latter is releasing the follow up to 2002's Let Go on 9/13. The album will be called The Weight is a Gift and they've got a free song to download:

I know pathetically little about the Beatles, but I do know that somebody in the Beatles could have recorded something like this in the early '70s. My favorite lyric is the one early on about putting pants on.

One of my recent favorites. It's got kind of a rope-a-dope pace and for some reason I picture an old dude wearing overalls, sitting on a little dock, fishing by himself while he chews on a a piece of straw. In spite of this, a banjo is not prominently involved.

Donnie Darko is one of those fucked up movies that just works, in part because of its soundtrack which is late '80s-heavy, but without being an overtly *'80s* soundtrack.
