Hello, Cleveland!

[ 3.02.2005 ]

Saw Hotel Rwanda and thought it was really great. Ocean's 11 made me really doubt Don Cheadle's ability to do any accent, but his performance is fantastic, and made me remember his great performance way back when in Traffic. Anyway, it's the true story of a hotel manager in the Rwandan capitol of Kigali who attempted to save members of the Tutsi minority during the 1994 genocide.

Google cleaned up their comments thing, so I activated them again.

Download DFA79's You're a Woman, I'm a Machine. The catch is that the "Sexy Results" file is incomplete, and that's arguably the best song on the album.

Very good music blog: Torr. I got the Bravery's links from him the other day and now he has a really cool link to the Bravery doing a slowed-down version of "Honest Mistake" on the BBC. Clickety-clack.

I spent plenty of time scouring the SXSW website last year for mp3s of performers, but now someone's done it for us.

Swedes Mando Diao had one of the more under-the-radar rock albums of 2003 with Bring 'em In. The best song is probably "Mr. Moon."

Their new album is called Hurricane Bar, which from my limited sampling seems to be more of the same good stuff: catchy, '60s rock revivalism with a contemporary alt-bent, plus the slightest touch of motown. Check out the video for "God Knows."

New Garbage song, "Why Do You Love Me?"

Find a shitload of old garbage stuff (though mostly in Ogg Vorbis format) here. Takes a minute to load. Two of my all-time fave slow songs:
Garbage / "The Trick is to Keep Breathing"
Garbage / "You Look So Fine"

Good reviews of Doves' Some Cities are trickling in. Pitchfork gave it a 7.8, but what I didn't understand was Sam Ubl's insistence on saying Jimi Goodwin has a bad voice. I think most albums Pitchfork gives good ratings have singers who can't sing. Anyway, I digress...but Scott Reid at Coke Machine Glow is absolutely dead on though. I don't know if I've ever agreed with another review as much as this one.

Very cool website that posts links to full albums. It's sort of Japanese.

I'm currently enjoying Malcolm Gladwell's Blink; here's a CNN dealy about him. Check out his website for tons of great articles. While I really enjoyed The Tipping Point when I read it freshman year, I can't claim to have snuck/sneaked into a librarians' conference to see him speak (ahem, Rosa).

Hotel Rwanda was great. It got robbed of a best pic nom by Finding Neverland. Pretty ridiculous.
