Hello, Cleveland!

[ 2.02.2005 ]

Sadly, I haven't been able to find a freebie mp3 of The Bravery's awesome "Tyrant" floating around online (I tried, honest), but rest assured their eponymously titled debut album will be worth the wait come March. I've been putting "Honest Mistake" on cd mixes since last summer and this one is about as good, though slower and more expansive-feeling. If you do hear it, listen for the intro beats--is that the first part of Daft Punk's "Da Funk" or is it just me? The rest of it is totally different, but the similarity immediately hit me. Anyway...

I did find a fantastic Nada Surf mp3 site though: www.nadasurfan.com. You have to register first, but that takes two seconds and gives access to a million live tracks as well as some radio edits and b-sides. Fucking awesome site. And oh by the way, Let Go is one of my favorite albums of the decade. As for Nada, they're supposedly working on a new album.

I immediately downloaded about 12 different versions of "Inside of Love." My fave versions were the Carson Daly version (on his show, not performed by him) and the Rock Sound Sampler version. Anyway, I won't link anymore...go get 'em yourself. Giddyup!

Scary shit:

"There is no credible scientific challenge to the idea that all living things evolved from common ancestors, that evolution on earth has been going on for billions of years and that evolution can be and has been tested and confirmed by the methods of science. But in a 2001 survey, the National Science Foundation found that only 53 percent of Americans agreed with the statement "human beings, as we know them, developed from earlier species of animals."

"And this was good news to the foundation. It was the first time one of its regular surveys showed a majority of Americans had accepted the idea. According to the foundation report, polls consistently show that a plurality of Americans believe that God created humans in their present form about 10,000 years ago, and about two-thirds believe that this belief should be taught along with evolution in public schools."

It goes on to point out Japan for instance has a 96% "acceptance rate" of evolution while even Poland (which is pretty Catholic, and not entirely rich...) has a 75% rate. I find this fucking alarming, because it's one thing to believe in God, but quite another to look at the massive, overwhelming evidence supporting evolution (as well as the complete lack of evidence for anything else) and reject it out of hand. Those backward-ass red states strike again...

As a Wisconsinite, I find this potentially very sad and very strange. It just didn't seem like it would ever happen, you know?
