Hello, Cleveland!

[ 1.19.2005 ]

Sorry, no new music, but this is one of my top twenty favorite songs of the '90s. That's an overly precise way of saying I really like it.

M83 / "Run Into Flowers".

Dwyane Wade is the large black man.

It seems dissing the NBA is as popular as ever these days, but I'm perilously close to buying NBA League Pass (all games available each night...right now it's 189 bucks for the rest of the season). Why?

1. Desmond Mason/The Milwaukee Bucks
2. Dwyane Wade
3. Lebron James
4. All the guys on my fantasy team (including Dwyane)

While I don't like pop music generally, I have a strange sort of respect for some pop stars. For instance, I'm glad Justin Timberlake exists. He's got a great voice and is a great dancer, so if people like that shit, then there you go. Am I going to buy his records? No. Am I going to not change the channel if I see his music video? No. But am I going to bad-mouth Messr. Timberlake as a reprehensible pop culture phenomenon? Absolutely not.

OK, so that brings me to my link. Here we find Simon Cowell dissing Beyonce. ``She's not sexy, she hasn't got a great body and she's not a great singer.'' I'm not normally attracted to girls "like" Beyonce but I think Beyonce is hot. So I think that should carry some weight.

Some fucked-up stuff going on at Smith. I found this article interesting because while I once saw a Law and Order episode about two women who raped a male stripper, I honestly can't remember hearing about a woman rape another woman in the news, much less at a liberal arts college. Why is that? (no actual crime occurs in prisons obviously).

I HATE the ESPN Sunday night football crew. Paul Maguire is horrible, Mike Patrick is WAY too animated, Joe Theisman needs to shut the fuck up, and I'd like to put a brick through Suzy Kolber's enthusiastic little skull. OK, maybe they're not that bad. In any case, this year I found myself doing something I've never previously done: turning down the volume of the TV to avoid having to listen to these people.

So I was pleased to read that SI's Dr. Z feels the same way. Not sure if I agree with his dissing of my uncle John though.

BTW, I've finally rediscovered SI through some of their web columns. For a while there they wanted to become ESPN, but fortunately they've gone back to basics (hell, Peter King, who is also very good, shows up on ESPN a fair amount).

If only one person was allowed to contine writing their opinions on the internet I think I'd want Bill Simmons to be that man. Especially if his intern's links keep getting updated. For the record, I saw this article before it made the links: the defense department apparently looked into the possibility of chemical weapons which would make opposing troops sexually attracted to one another (read: gay) as well as give them unbearably bad breath. Good times!

A new approach to road rage.

Speaking of which, this is just frightening. Since the story is 6 years old I guess we could do some follow up, but I sure won't.
