It's unbelievable how painful I'm making the final paper of my college career. I have a 12-15 pager due Friday, and I haven't had anything to do since May 7, when I turned in my 178x take-home (pass/fail, wack wack). It's for my German 261: Cinema and Nation class. Basically I'm writing "on" Die Bruecke, a 1959 German movie about seven boys who are drafted at the end of World War II. The movie is really great, beautiful direction and one of the best war movies I've seen. I'm also comparing it to a handful of other films of the 30s, 40s and 50s, but my basic task to "problematize" Die Bruecke. Today I met with Prof. Eric Rentschler, "Rick" to his friends and a legend among us for his...hmm....ok...(you have to be there). He was very helpful, so hopefully I'll finally be able to start churning some stuff out
The problem is writing about films is challenging for me, mainly because I take this class with a bunch of graduate film students who sound so fucking cool and smart when they write and talk that I'm just left sitting there wishing I could come close. So it's tough to just write things that make sense without trying to sound like a wannabe filmophile. Anyway, it will get done, that's not the question, but I don't just want to turn something in and say "fuck it" because Rentschler's helped me out a lot so far and I kind of feel like I owe him something respectable. The saga continues (Wu-Tang, Wu-Tang! nevermind...)
